Flood situation in Terengganu worsens
NORHASPIDA YATIMKUALA TERENGGANU - The flood situation has worsened in Terengganu with a total of 3,434 flood victims from 985 families evacuated to 67 relief centres (PPS) in Kemaman, Hulu Terengganu, Besut, Dungun and Setiu.
The State Disaster Management Committee secretariat said as of 4pm, today, the number of flood victims in Kemaman increased to 1,995 people from 539 families who were placed in 21 PPS.
Apart from that, 562 people from 207 families have been moved to 16 PPS in Hulu Terengganu, 471 flood victims from 106 families to 15 PPS in Besut, 305 victims from 105 families to 10 PPS in Setiu and 101 from 28 families to five PPS in Dungun.
Meanwhile, the state Public Works Department (JKR) in a statement, today, said several roads in the five districts were closed to all vehicles due to the floods.
Among the roads involved were Jalan Pelantoh (Kampung Pelantoh) with the flood level at 0.85 metres, Jalan Teladas Air Putih (Jambatan Lama Teladas) with the flood level at 0.8 metres, Jalan Air Putih (Masjid Kampung Tebak- 0.76 metres), Jalan Air Putih (Chukai toll exit - 0.2 metres) and Jalan Air Putih (Kampung Dadong -Sawah Padi- 0.76 metres) in Kemaman.
In Besut, the roads involved were Jalan Jerteh-Keruak (Kampung Duek) and Jalan Jerteh- Keruak (Kampung Jerubun) each submerged in 0.80-metres flood waters while in Setiu, Jalan Pengkalan Merbau-Pelong (Kampung Seri Kenangan) with flood level at 1.25 metres was closed.
Meanwhile, the official website of the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) reported that eight rivers in the five districts in Terengganu have exceeded the danger level.
Among the rivers involved were Sungai Chalok, Sungai Setiu and Sungai Nerus in Setiu, Sungai Telemong in Hulu Terengganu, Sungai Marang, Sungai Kemaman and Sungai Tebak in Kemaman as well as Sungai Dungun in Dungun.
