MetMalaysia assures no tsunami threat after tremors felt in Peninsular Malaysia post-quake in North Sumatra

SHAH ALAM - Several areas in the Klang Valley, Putrajaya, Pahang, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Johor today reportedly experienced tremors after an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale struck Indonesia's North Sumatra.

This was confirmed by the Malaysian Meteorological Department in an update on Twitter.

The 9.39am quake struck 17 kilometres (km) northeast of Pasaman Barat at a depth of 10 kilometres.

However, the earthquake does not have the potential to cause tsunami.

Tremors were felt in several areas in the Klang valley, including Kuala Lumpur, Port Klang and Cyberjaya.

According to a tweet by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, aftershocks may occur in the next hours or days.

Unless it is necessary, stay away from damaged areas for safety, it wrote.
