KUANTAN - A Russian tanker ship crew member is missing after falling off the vessel near Tanjung Gelang here, last night.

Pahang's Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director First Maritime Admiral Kamal Ariffin Jusoh said Nerkrasov Sergey, 48, was reported missing at 1.6 nautical miles east of Tanjung Gelang.

The Liberian-registered vessel was reported to have been sailing from Pasir Gudang in Johor to Pula, Croatia.

"Search and rescue operations were activated as soon as the Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC) in Kuantan received a report from the Maritime Rescue Coordinating Centre (MRCC) headquarters in Putrajaya.

"Patrol boats were mobilised immediately and Pahang MMEA also channeled information to Johor MRSC and MMEA air assets for assistance,” he said in a statement today.

Kamal Ariffin said local fishermen and other agencies were also notified of the incident. - BERNAMA
