SHAH ALAM - Covid-19 cases will now be announced with other related data the following day, said Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin, adding that the move is to remove fear over the latest surge of Omicron cases.

He said the data will now be released together with other categories such as bed utilisation, the number of patients in intensive care, and the number of patients requiring respiratory assistance.

The move starts with Friday’s daily case numbers only to be released on Saturday morning.

In a press conference, he added this involves a change in mindset and to avoid public panic.

"Rather than looking at 20,000 cases or 30,000 cases daily, we should look at it with the other metrics and get a clearer picture of the real situation,” he said.

Khairy had previously cautioned the public over the surge of Covid-19 cases, urging the public to look at other important indicators such as the rate of admission and those needing intensive care unit and respiratory assistance.

Malaysia is experiencing a new wave of infection caused by the Omicron, hitting a new record of 27,831 cases.

However only 97 of the cases had been in categories 3, 4 and 5 that were considered severe.
