Twelve-year-old Malaysian girl woo judges on British baking show

A 12-year-old Malaysian has made quite an impression with the judges of a British baking show called 'Junior Bake Off', showing off her creative creations that paid homage to her Malaysian heritage. ‘Junior Bake Off’ is a television show based in the United Kingdom (UK) participated by young cooks from nine to 12 years old to show off their baking skills in front of judges Liam Charles and Ravneet Gill.

Her creativity stood out when participants were challenged to bake biscuits in episode 2 of the show and she came up with the brilliant idea to create an ‘About Me' biscuit box that was decorated with hibiscus flowers.

In episode five, she created a Jalur Gemilang and Union Jack on a crest pie, with chicken curry filling using Malaysian condiments to represent her identity as a Malaysian. The impressive creation only took her two hours to create.

Aisya Syahrul was made as ‘Star Baker’ for the ninth episode of the show in which the participants were challenged to create a dish according to a theme called “Dessert imposter’.

Her twist on the presentation of a chocolate cake was creating a realistic-looking serving of chicken satay complemented by ‘banana leaf’, ‘sliced onions’, ’cucumber’ and even sauce as the decoration has gained the grounds when the judges are applauding her for her creation.

The 12-year-old, Manchester-raised girl said she enjoys using Malaysian ingredients in her baking and she has been picking up the skills and recipe from her mother and grandmother in Malaysia through video calls.

"I wanted my bakes to have been tasted from a professional point of view so that I could get better feedback and become a better baker," said Aisya.
