SHAH ALAM -- Some 1,864 pigs have been destroyed by the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) in Paya Mengkuang, Masjid Tanah, Melaka following an outbreak of the African Swine Fever (ASF) there.

In a statement today, DVS director-general Datuk Dr Norlizan Mohd Noor said the disposal of the pigs was done based on a "stamping out policy" following preliminary investigations that found ASF outbreaks in 16 commercial pigs farms within the area.

Dr Norlizan further stated that the DVS is still carrying out ongoing investigations and sample testing in all 35 farms in Paya Mengkuang and that all subsequent disposal of pigs are333 being done in accordance with best practices.

Prior to today's statement, the DVS had on December 25, 2021, declared an AFS outbreak in seven pig farms at the aforementioned location.

The total number of disposed of pigs were recorded as of January 7, 2022.

Livestock farmers and the public are urged to report any pigs death within the vicinity of the area to the district or state DVS or through the department's hotline at 03-8870 2041
