Fadhlina appointed as Parliamentary Special Select Committee deputy president

SHAH ALAM - Legal advisor Senator Fadhlina Datuk Sidek has been appointed as the Special Select Committee for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption deputy president during its first meeting on Tuesday.

Senate President Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim said another three Special Select Committee members are Senator Datuk Jefridin Atan, Senator Datuk Seri Vell Paari dan Senator Datuk Zaiedi Suhaili.

He said as the Special Select Committee that holds the legislative power in Malaysia, the Special Select Committee for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption have the power to summon any party related to the issues of governance, integrity and anti-corruption.

“It is in accordance with the provisions of Standing Order 75 (2) of the Rules of the Senate and any refusal or default of any party to appear before the committee or to submit the documents requested by the Committee can be punished by the House in accordance with the Parliamentary Councils Act (Privileges and Powers) 1952 [Act 347].

“The Special Select Committee is also responsible to examine the bills of law, investigate and report any suggestion, proposal, petition, report or document about the issues raised regarding governance, integrity and anti-corruption which will then be submitted to the Senate,” he said in a statement.

Special Select Committee for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption is one of the three Senate Select Committee formed as an effort to transform the Parliament.

On Oct 28, the Senate will form three Select Committee which are the Select Committee for People’s Well-being, Select Committee for Communication and Education, and the Select Committee for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption as a Parliament transformation initiative.

He said that the Select Committee for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption also functions to balance the anti-corruption matters that are uncoordinated in the context of Parliament.

Rais added that people can submit their petition directly to the Select Committee for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption about issues under the jurisdiction of this Select Committee if they have any information.

“Engagement sessions on this Select Committee for all Members of Parliament will be held from time to time,” he said.
