KUALA LUMPUR -- Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah underlines that the ministry was in need of capable people with an adept understanding of culture to fill in the new roles of Cultural Secretary and Creative Advisor, resulting in the appointment of Dr. Ahmad Idham Ahmad Nazri and Datuk Seri Eizlan Yusof, respectively.

“What I was looking for was people who are willing to work and understand a little bit about culture so that we can start somewhere,” he said.

Saifuddin explained that he have to use the resources available to him since the ministry does not allocate a budget to start on cultural diplomacy and these two aforementioned individuals have offered themselves for the positions.

He also said that Dr. Ahmad Idham and Datuk Seri Eizlan are not paid handsomely compared to their previous jobs and they have referred to their current responsibilities as national service.

“Ahmad Idham was kind enough to resign from his position as the CEO of the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS) and he was paid quite handsomely for that position, along with a car, driver, personal assistant and a better office, just to serve me on an available position with a grade 54 salary,” he said.

“Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Eizlan received no payment at all for the position he volunteered for, so what he is doing can be considered national service,” he added.

Another reason for their appointment to the roles is because Saifuddin believes film encompasses almost all genres of arts, and these two have extensive experience in Malaysia’s creative industry with multiple local and international awards won during their involvement in the industry.

“Just like wayang kulit covers almost all areas of performing arts, film also encompasses almost all genres of arts and it is vital for cultural diplomacy,” he said.
