The year 2021 presented itself with a whirlwind of uncertainties but let's not give up on hope. Surely, better days are coming in 2022.

In the spirit of new year, new you - there is no better time to set new goals. It could be to live a healthier lifestyle or breaking bad habits. But adopting good habits to ensure your mind stays healthy is important to get things done. Here's how.

MENTAL HEALTH IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS PHYSICAL HEALTH

To start off, recognise that mental health is just as important as physical health. We tend to think of the mind and body as separate when they are interconnected. There is no way we can lead a healthy life if we only focus on our physical health and ignore our psychological state. When your state of mind is weak, it leads to depression, stress and anxiety. This will eventually affect your relationship with loved ones, friends and family.

PRACTICE SELF CARE When you understand that mental health plays a vital role in your overall well-being, engage in a self-care routine. Did you know that by doing this it can help to reduce stress, improve concentration and make you happier? In between work demands and other challenges, it can be overwhelming. Spare at least 5 minutes or 10 minutes of your time to relax by doing things that can calm you down such as listening to podcasts, music or even painting.

EXERCISE As mentioned, mental health and physical health go hand in hand. Exercising is scientifically proven to be good in fighting off depression. So, consider making exercise as your weekly, if not daily routine. Exercising also helps to put your chaotic mind at bay by releasing dopamine and serotonin that improve moods, and helps the individual to feel motivated. It only takes 30 minutes out of your day!

STAY CONNECTED No, we don't mean stay connected via the social media world only. Human connection is essential for good health. Good connections with family and friends will help you to positively gather your thoughts and to keep your feet on the ground. For people who live alone especially, the lack of contact may affect the mental health. Consider scheduling social catch ups with friends to stay socially and emotionally connected.

SLEEP WELL Sometimes real life can stand in the way of achieving a perfect sleeping routine but try your best to sleep at roughly the same time every night. It's not just children who benefit from a regular sleep schedule, but adults also need to maintain consistent sleep routines. Think of it this way - poor sleeping habits can increase the risk of poor health and poor health can make it harder to sleep. When we experience poor sleeping habits, it can actually lead to serious health problems both mentally and physically. It's a vicious cycle.
