The role of Malaysia’s Ambassador to the US was crucial in maintaining bilateral relations between Malaysia and the US, especially in terms of trade.

SHAH ALAM - Three prominent Malaysian political veterans — Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, 81, Tan Sri Rais Yatim, 83, and Tun Musa Hitam, 91, have been considered as the most qualified candidated to be appointed as Malaysia’s next Ambassador to the United States (US), thanks to their extensive diplomatic and governmental experience.

Political analyst Mujibu Abd Muis said their strong track record in international relations and negotiation during past government roles made them well-qualified for the post.

He said the role of Malaysia’s Ambassador to the US was crucial in maintaining bilateral relations between Malaysia and the US, especially in terms of trade.

"If the intention is to appoint a politician as ambassador to the US, I believe the candidate must be a respected figure with strong international ties.

"Therefore, appointing these figures would certainly be beyond dispute by the public, as they possess credibility in contrast to more controversial personalities.

"However, in my opinion, the US ambassador should ideally be selected from among seasoned diplomats who have long served with Wisma Putra rather than political figures," he told Sinar.

The post of Malaysian Ambassador to the US was last held by former tourism, arts and culture minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz, who began his two-year term on Feb 9, 2023.

"The current situation under the present US administration demands an ambassador who is not only adept in matters of tariff wars but also in issues related to security and human rights," he added.

On April 4, the Prime Minister confirmed that the new candidate for Malaysia’s Ambassador to the US had received the King’s consent and would be announced soon.
