GENEVA - A new United Nations (UN) report warned recently of an "alarming increase" in child trafficking rates, with children accounting for 38 per cent of global human trafficking victims, amid estimates that the actual figures may be higher than reported.

According to the Qatar News Agency (QNA) the annual report of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, submitted to the Human Rights Council, indicated an increase in the percentage of child victims over the past five years, especially among girls.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General Dr Najat Maalla M'jid emphasised that human traffickers are exploiting technology and crises, while counter-terrorism responses remain inadequate, calling for greater investment in social protection systems and legal accountability.

The report highlighted three main factors behind the growth of this crime: the exacerbation of children's vulnerability due to poverty and conflict, the expansion of trafficking networks using technology, and the rising demand for child exploitation in various forms.
