SHAH ALAM – Former Baling MP Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has divorced his second wife, Marina Mohamed, by pronouncing talak satu at the Petaling Lower Syariah Court on Monday.
Marina, 50, previously represented Abdul Azeez as his lawyer in a 2021 civil forfeiture case, where the government sought to seize nearly RM16 million in assets, including a shop lot in Bandar Sunway, from the former Tabung Haji (TH) chairman’s family.
The case was later withdrawn three years ago.
Following the proceedings, Azeez left the courtroom with his lawyer, while Marina was seen in tears.
During the hearing, Syariah Judge Abdul Malik Soleh recorded the divorce at 10.45am, granting approval after nearly an hour of deliberation.
The court allowed Abdul Azeez's divorce application, filed on December 9 2024, under Section 47 of the Islamic Family Law (Selangor) Enactment 2003.
Marina was ordered to observe the iddah period for three menstrual cycles and the separation must be officially registered.
Syariah lawyer Datuk Mohd Zaidi Md Zain, representing Abdul Azeez said the court recognised the divorce following a decision by the Conciliation Committee (JKP) at the Islamic Religious Office.
According to the report, the couple faced shiqaq (irreconcilable marital conflict), with prolonged disputes that could not be resolved.
"The defendant is his second wife, and the pronouncement was made amicably with talak satu today," he said outside the court.
Meanwhile, Marina’s lawyer, Azmi Mohd Rais said the court had scheduled Monday for the divorce claim proceedings and advised Abdul Azeez to proceed with the pronouncement.
"The decision was based on the absence of mawaddah wa rahmah (love and mercy) in their marriage and a lack of understanding and affection.
"Initially, my client did not agree, but after the JKP meeting, it was determined that reconciliation was not possible, leaving the right to divorce with the husband," he said.
Marina and Abdul Azeez were married in Bachok, Kelantan, on September 11, 2019. They have no children.
