Imposing a term limit for the country’s top leader would bring many positive effects, particularly in preventing abuse of power.

SHAH ALAM – The Umno Veterans Club has left it to the party's supreme council to discuss DAP's proposal for the government to amend the Federal Constitution to limit the Prime Minister's tenure to 10 years.

Its secretary-general Datuk Mustapha Yaakob said any party resolution must go through the proper process.

"If we look at it, this proposal was part of Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto during the previous General Election. If a promise is made, it should be fulfilled, but in this context, Umno needs to deliberate first.

"So, we leave it to the supreme council to decide because once the constitution is amended, it cannot be reversed, and the Prime Minister’s tenure would be strictly limited to two terms or 10 years," he told Sinar.

However, Mustapha said he personally agreed with DAP’s proposal, which was presented during the 18th DAP National Congress on Sunday.

He said imposing a term limit for the country’s top leader would bring many positive effects, particularly in preventing abuse of power.

"In my opinion, this is a good proposal that should be considered for implementation. However, if this amendment is made, we hope it will not only apply to the Prime Minister but also to Cabinet ministers.

"It cannot be denied that holding key positions for too long increases the risk of abuse of power and other issues. So, this is a good initiative," he added.
