SHAH ALAM – An expert has warned that the government's "let the courts decide" stance on the royal pardon granted to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak could have serious repercussions, including damaging the perception of national sovereignty.
Universiti Malaya (UM) senior lecturer Dr Muhammad Asri Mohd Ali stated that such an attitude could also make the public view the government as disrespecting the institution of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, which is crucial to both the Malay community and the Federal Constitution.
"Thirdly, if the legal system cannot defend the fate of a citizen who is a former prime minister, what will happen to ordinary people?"
"The implications of this crisis extend beyond our borders; the world will be watching Malaysia for a long time," Asri, who is from the Political Science, Public Administration and Development Department said.
He also noted that even if there were a change in government, the situation would likely remain the same.
"This country is not governed by the rule of law but by laws that are used for political interests and other purposes," Asri added.
His remarks were made during the 470th edition of Wacana Sinar, titled Politics 2025, Malay Unity, and the Najib Factor.
Also present at the discussion were Umno Subang Division chief Datuk Armand Azha Abu Hanifah and PKR Information Coordination secretary Iswardy Morni.
Asri further emphasised that a lack of understanding regarding the concept of sovereignty is a serious issue, one that could lead to confusion.
He stressed the importance of respecting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s power of pardon, noting that it is a cornerstone of the nation’s sovereignty and dignity.
"When this issue arises on the part of the government, it reflects a weak understanding of managing sovereignty.
"The decisions made by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at the time must be upheld as they are key to the sovereignty of the nation," he said.
