JOHOR BAHRU - A married couple with health issues is appealing to the relevant authorities to relocate them to a ground floor unit at the Desa Mutiara People’s Housing Project (PPR) here.
Jalil Zaman, 58, who currently lives on the fifth floor, said he has lost sight in both eyes since 2018, while his wife, Fauziah Mat Nor, 51, suffers from cervical pain and a slipped disc.
"Our health conditions make it extremely difficult to navigate the stairs for daily errands or to seek treatment. Moreover, I am now visually impaired due to glaucoma and cataracts,” he told reporters when met at his residence today.
Jalil said before losing sight, he worked as a lorry driver with a daily wage. Now, he relies solely on assistance from the Social Welfare Department and the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) Foundation, which is used to pay their monthly rent.
"The balance is only enough to buy daily necessities and pay our bills. We have to save money over several months for medication because the medicines must be purchased from pharmacies.
"The cost of six types of medication is around RM700,” he said, adding that doctors have informed him that he has a chance of regaining his sight, but he would need to undergo surgery, which would cost over RM7,000.
Those who wish to assist can channel their contributions to BSN account number 01100-29-87741161-3 under the name Jalil Zaman.
Earlier, Econsave general manager Mas Imran Adam presented the couple, who have no children or close relatives to assist them, with donations of groceries, household items and electrical appliances. - BERNAMA
