KUALA LUMPUR – A TikTok user identified as Rayyan Wong was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly posting offensive content that insulted the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Regent of Johor and the Prime Minister.
The arrest followed a police report lodged by an officer from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) regarding the offensive content, which was uploaded to the TikTok account at 4.30pm.
Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated that the content was deemed offensive and was intended to provoke, demean, and insult the royal institution.
"Further investigation led to the suspect's arrest. The officer identified the offensive content, which had been uploaded at 4.30pm by the TikTok account owner on the platform," he said on Wednesday.
Police seized a smartphone belonging to the suspect as part of the investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
"It was also found that the posting intended to incite hatred and provoke hostility against the Royal Institution, potentially jeopardising public safety and national harmony," Razarudin added.
