SHAH ALAM - The National Unity Ministry (KPN) gives full commitment to strengthen national unity by creating integration platforms that promote social interaction among Malaysians of diverse races, religions, and cultures, leading to remarkable achievements.
The ministry’s strategic efforts, through the implementation of various initiatives and programmes aimed at fostering the spirit of unity and enhancing relationships among Malaysians, have successfully maintained the existing harmony and well-being of the nation.
The ministry, through its agencies, has successfully organised more than 300 high-impact programmes centered on the clusters of Semarak Kenegaraan (National Spirit), Semarak Perpaduan (Unity Spirit), and Komuniti Rahmah(Rahmah Community).
Its Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang said that the National Unity Policy (DPN) serves as an overarching framework guiding continuous efforts to nurture, strengthen, and preserve unity among the people.
"The concept of Unity in Diversity is to sustain harmony in the country’s multiracial society. The DPN sets the direction for national unity and acts as a catalyst for achieving Malaysia as a united, harmonious, and prosperous nation.
"The foundation of DPN’s core and strategies lies in the Federal Constitution and the Rukun Negara. The history and spirit behind these must be understood and practiced by all layers of society, forming the basis for all government policies.
"The DPN is also aligned with the goals outlined under the Malaysia Madani initiative," he said in a statement.
He added that the ministry has adopted an approach through programme implementation to bridge the social gap among Malaysians while celebrating cultural, traditional, festive, and heritage diversity.
"The ministry's theme this year aligns with this goal: Fostering Unity, Celebrating Diversity.
"All programmes and initiatives this year have been based on the three objectives outlined in the DPN: strengthening unity and national integration, shaping a national identity, and cultivating Malaysians who value and practice unity," he said.
Meanwhile, Universiti Putra Malaysia Senior Lecturer Dr Syed Agil Alsagoff viewed KPN’s achievements in 2024 positively.
"These achievements are based on the number of initiatives and programmes implemented by KPN throughout the year. Programmes that have boosted the spirit of unity in the Madani society this year have seen significant progress, particularly in the public’s acceptance and participation.
"KPN has improved and diversified its programmes aimed at fostering unity in the country’s multiracial society," he said.
He also said that the various programmes targeting diverse communities have benefited them, particularly in empowering the spirit of volunteerism within communities.
"Patriotism programmes that instill a sense of belonging among all ethnicities expose communities to readiness and encourage their involvement in cross-cultural national programs, emphasising the importance of understanding and embracing the principles of the Rukun Negara," he added.
Commenting further, he suggested that KPN could collaborate with other ministries, government agencies, and private sectors to continue nurturing the national unity spirit to advance the Madani agenda for this year and beyond.
"KPN could also work with the Higher Education Ministry (KPT) to target continuous high-impact volunteer programmes at higher learning institutions (IPTs).
"The understanding of national unity concepts could be specifically integrated into teaching curriculums at IPTs, in line with the needs and interests of today’s younger generation, to make them aware of the importance of unity under the government’s Madani agenda,” he said.
However, he noted that while most programmes conducted by KPN are excellent for uniting Malaysians, there is a need for better approaches using social media platforms like TikTok and Facebook to engage the youth.
"In the past, during former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s era, there was the Semarak programme, a nationwide road tour that had a significant positive impact on society at that time as the community’s unity was still strong.
"In my opinion, leverage all available information technology to revive the idea of unity," he said.
