KUALA TERENGGANU - A bear was seen writhing in pain on the road, believed to have been hit by a vehicle in an incident at the 422-kilometre mark on the East Coast Highway 2 (LPT2), heading from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan.
The incident was shared by a social media user identified as Khairul Nizam through a 59-second video posted on his Facebook page on Monday.
He said he was among the first to pass through the area and managed to record the bear’s condition shortly after it hit on Sunday.
According to him, vehicles had to come to a sudden stop to avoid colliding with the injured animal.
"From a distance, I thought a motorcyclist had been hit because of its large size, comparable to a human. It was only when I got closer that I realised it was a bear.
"It tried to get up but couldn’t; maybe it was injured," he explained in his post.
Khairul Nizam added that he immediately contacted LPT2 to request a patrol.
He also expressed hope that the incident would attract the attention of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) in Terengganu.
"Poor bear, I hope Perhilitan can provide treatment," he wrote.
Meanwhile, Terengganu Perhilitan Director Loo Kean Seong stated that six personnel were deployed to the scene around 1.30pm on Sunday.
However, he reported that the bear was no longer at the location when they arrived.
"We hope the public will report any further information regarding the animal to Perhilitan," he said.
