SHAH ALAM - Job losses from boycotts of Israel-related brands should be addressed to company management, as a strong stance against genocide in Palestine could prevent consumer boycotts.

Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Malaysia chairman Professor Dr Mohd Nazari Ismail said that job losses linked to boycotts on Israel-affiliated brands fall under the responsibility of those companies’ management.

He said that if these brands exited the Israeli market or issued firm statements condemning the genocide in Palestine and supporting the Palestinian struggle for justice, consumers would likely refrain from boycotting them.

"The decision to remain in the Israeli market without taking a firm stance against the atrocities in Palestine is why people are choosing to avoid their products. Blaming consumers is unfair; consumers have values and sentiments that they expect companies to respect.

"It is, therefore, up to these companies to align their policies and practices with the values of their customers. When this alignment fails, consumers exercise their right to boycott.

"If companies insist on operating in Israel without acknowledging the crisis, the resulting impact on sales and jobs is a direct consequence of their own choices, not the consumers,” he added.

Nazari pointed out that the takeaway for these companies was simple; to retain consumer trust and loyalty, their image and actions must reflect the values that matter to their customers.

He also explained that the Malaysian boycotts of Israel-related brands were closely tied to the situation in Palestine.

"The ongoing genocide and horrific atrocities committed against Palestinians drive these efforts. As long as these injustices persist, I believe Malaysians will continue to support boycotts.

"Awareness is key, and we at BDS Malaysia work diligently to keep Malaysians informed about the realities in Palestine. With strong consciences and a deep sense of justice, informed Malaysians are likely to support the Palestinian cause and maintain these boycotts.

"Ultimately, the persistence of these boycotts depends on what continues to unfold in Palestine,” he said.
