TANAH MERAH - A nine-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a car while crossing the road on Jalan Pasir Mas-Tanah Merah, Kampung Belimbing, on Thursday.
The victim, Ahmad Al Mahdi Sihabuddin, was a standard three student at Sekolah Ugama (A) Rahmaniah, Kampung Paloh. He died while receiving treatment at Tanah Merah Hospital at 9pm.
Tanah Merah district police chief Superintendent Mohd Haki Hasbullah said that initial investigations at the scene revealed that a Perodua MyVi car was driven by a 61-year-old elderly man heading from Tanah Merah towards Pasir Mas.
"Upon arriving at the scene, the victim suddenly crossed the road from left to right.
"Due to the short distance, the driver did not have time to avoid and struck the victim, causing him to fall by the roadside," he said in a press statement on Friday.
As a result of the accident, the victim suffered severe head injuries and was taken to Tanah Merah Hospital for treatment.
"However, the victim died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
"The police are seeking the cooperation of the public who witnessed the incident to come forward to assist with the investigation or contact traffic investigation officer Inspector Mohd Afiq Mohd Sulaiman at 013-3533653," said Haki.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
