Citizenship amendment a victory for all mothers – Azalina

SHAH ALAM – The amendment to the Federal Constitution (Amendment Bill) related to citizenship, passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday, is seen as a victory for all Malaysian citizen mothers.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that the bill was passed with a vote exceeding the two-thirds majority required by the Constitution.

Previously, the Dewan Rakyat passed the amendment, which was tabled by the Home Ministry.

The bill, presented for a second reading in March, was passed with a two-thirds majority after being debated by 70 members of parliament.

Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul announced the decision following a division vote.

He said that 206 members of parliament agreed to pass the Federal Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2024, while one disagreed, and 14 were absent.
