SHAH ALAM - TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, has decided to lay off more than 500 employees.
According to a report by The Malaysian Reserve (TMR), the decision was communicated through an email sent to the affected employees.
It is understood that the majority of these employees were involved in creating video content for the platform, not only limited to Southeast Asia but for other regions as well.
"TikTok uses a combination of automated systems and human moderators to manage the content on the platform.
"This process is specifically designed to filter out inappropriate, harmful, or policy-violating content, with human oversight to regulate AI-based TikTok content through supervised learning.
"Human feedback is used to improve the accuracy and capability of AI-generated content," it said on Thursday.
In June, Bloomberg reported that ByteDance laid off 450 employees in Indonesia and acquired the e-commerce platform Tokopedia, merging it with TikTok operations.
Earlier, CNN reported that the Chinese tech giant had previously planned to lay off employees worldwide, affecting staff in marketing, support services, communications, content creation, and other areas.
Additionally, TikTok's global user operations division will undergo restructuring, with the remaining staff being divided into trust, safety, marketing, content, and production units.
So far, ByteDance has not issued any further responses or statements regarding the matter.
