Not only that, Hathway also tagged Malaysian screenwriter, producer and director Adele Lim - famous for Crazy Rich Asians, Joy Ride and Raya the Last Dragon. Lim is set to direct the movie.

Lim was quoted by Deadline: "As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be part of the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life”

"We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

"Princess Diaries 3” has been in development since 2022 and, last year, Hathaway shared an update about the long-awaited movie’s progress in an interview with V Magazine: "We’re in a good place,” Hathaway teased. "There’s nothing to announce yet. But we’re in a good place.”

However, it’s unknown if Julie Andrews, who plays Mia’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, will return to the franchise. The actor had told TODAY earlier this year that "sometimes it’s best to leave a good thing alone”.

News of the third film comes on the heels of similarly 2000s fuelled film nostalgia, with a The Devil Wears Prada sequel reportedly in the works, as well as Lindsay Lohan’s confirmation of a Freaky Friday sequel with Jamie Lee Curtis earlier this year.

For The Devil Wears Prada is supposedly moving forward, with Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt returning to reprise their roles as Miranda Priestly and Emily Charlton accordingly, however, Hathaway is not thought to be returning.
