KLUANG – A total of 23.39 per cent of the eligible voters in the Mahkota by-election have cast their ballots as of 11am today
When revealing this, Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun also urged more voters to step out and do their responsibility.
"We hope that those who have yet to vote will do so early, as the Malaysian Meteorological Department has forecast rain this afternoon,” he told reporters in a press conference, here.
Ramlan added that at least 60 per cent voter turnout was expected for the by-election.
"We are expecting a turnout exceeding 60 percent, compared to last election’s 57 percent.
"By 9pm, we anticipate being able to announce the candidate who won,” he said.
The polling centres will close at 6pm, after which vote-tallying will be conducted at Dewan Tunku Ibrahim Ismail here.
There are 66,318 registered voters for the by-election, and early voting was held on Tuesday for 4,437 military personnel and their spouses, and police personnel.
For this by-election, EC also issued 607 postal ballots on Sept 15. The by-election is a straight fight between Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Haizan Jaafar.
