Malaysia Ikram Health Association calls for wider halal certification.

SHAH ALAM - The possession of halal certification is crucial and should be expanded nationwide to ensure that the public, especially Muslims, have access to healthy, safe, and halal food.

Malaysia Ikram Health Association (Ikram Health) president Dr Mohd Afiq Mohd Nor said that halal is not only about religious prohibitions like alcohol and pork but also concerns health.

"Halal certification for eateries is important, not only to ensure compliance with religious laws but also to maintain hygiene and food quality standards for the public.

"Therefore, restaurant owners should obtain this certification.

"Halal food encompasses the principles of cleanliness, safety, and purity in food preparation and storage processes," he said.

He stressed that having halal certification instill confidence in consumers that the food being sold meets the high standards set by the authorities.

He added that it also fosters a culture of clean and hygienic food premises, free from contamination, including cigarette smoke.

He also suggested that the certification process be streamlined and expedited using the latest technological advancements.

"This initiative can be undertaken by halal authorities by categorising specific food outlets for halal certification without compromising the established halal standards.

"As for the certification process, if it indeed involves many steps and takes a long time, improvements should be made.

"Halal authorities should leverage the latest technological advancements to streamline and expedite the application process for the required documents," he said.
