KUALA LUMPUR - Rising crime rates in Malaysia are not solely driven by financial difficulties but also by a lack of parental attention, says Umno Youth Chief, Datuk Dr Akmal Saleh.
Addressing the recent surge in crime, Dr Akmal highlighted that criminal behaviour stems from multiple causes beyond economic hardship, especially among the youth.
"There are so many contributing factors to such matters, and it is crucial to see them from the socio-economic aspect.
"Economic constraints are happening not only in Malaysia but everywhere. These pressures can force individuals, regardless of age, to engage in activities they never imagined they would," he said when met at the World Trade Centre (WTC) in conjunction with Umno General Assembly 2024 recently.
Dr Akmal said that one of the key contributors to crime is neglect at home.
"In some families, parents are not involved in their children’s lives. This lack of parental attention is a significant factor in the problems we're witnessing," he said.
Dr Akmal urged a broader perspective when analysing crime, suggesting that a holistic approach is necessary.
"We must look beyond a single factor. Socio-political stability, employment status, and the overall social environment all play a role," he added.
Dr Akmal also shared his insights from a study conducted on individuals who commit crimes, revealing that financial problems are not the sole motivator.
"Our research shows that crime is not limited to those with financial difficulties. Sometimes, these individuals come from rich and wealthy backgrounds, but they are influenced by their peers and other social factors," he explained.
