GUA MUSANG - A retired soldier is willing to spend RM500 each year to decorate his home with the Jalur Gemilang for National Day.
Abu Bakar Jusoh, 69, said he ensures his home is enlivened with various types and sizes of the Jalur Gemilang.
"When National Day approaches, I allocate RM500 to buy and replace worn-out Jalur Gemilang flags.
"My love for this country is very strong because I am a retired soldier who fought against the communists in the past. This effort is to express my love for the country, even though I no longer serve," he told Bernama recently.
He said that each year, when August arrives, around 50 flags are put up around his house, and when they fade, they are replaced with new ones.
"I also train my children and grandchildren to hang the Jalur Gemilang so that their patriotism is continuously nurtured, not just during their school years.
"Alhamdulillah, in this residential area, I find that more and more neighbours are displaying the Jalur Gemilang, and the number increases each year," he said.
Abu Bakar also hope that the meaning of freedom and independence that we enjoy today continues to be appreciated and embraced by the younger generation. - BERNAMA
