KUALA LUMPUR - Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says achieving a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat is the ideal situation for the next general election.
However, he acknowledged that efforts must be done to achieve this.
This, he said was to avoid overlapping of seats contested within the component parties in the unity government.
"Personally, I believe that cooperation is what is most needed.
"However, when it comes to party symbols, each party will use its own symbol, even if they are part of the coalition," said the Deputy Prime Minister.
He said this in response to Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh's call for Umno to regain its position as a dominant political party and secure a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
Zahid also commented on the candidates for the upcoming Mahkota by-election in Johor next month.
"Everything will be considered and we still have the approach of winnability, acceptability and likeability.
"These will be the main criteria for selecting candidates who will contest in the Mahkota by-election," he said.
He said the list of candidates included all wings (Umno Youth, Umno Puteri and Umno Wanita) adding that consideration will be given in a balanced manner.
