KANGAR - Disputes between former spouses following a divorce have been identified as one of the causes of children’s nafkah (alimony) neglect in Perlis.
State Syarie Chief Judge Jaidi Ahmad said the Family Support Division (BSK) of the Perlis Syariah Judiciary Department receives about 100 cases each year involving nafkah issues.
"Children’s nafkah neglect is often caused by disputes over custody which create animosity between former spouses,” he told reporters after officiating the Seminar on the Enforcement and Implementation of Nafkah Orders of the Perlis BSK here recently.
Jaidi said that divorced couples should practice tolerance to ensure their responsibilities towards their children, particularly in terms of nafkah, are not neglected.
"In terms of child custody (in cases where the mother has custody), the mother should allow the father flexibility to visit the children and avoid any hostility,” he said.
In addition, Jaidi said that other factors contributing to nafkah neglect include economic pressure, which can hinder some fathers from providing for their children.
Earlier, in his speech, he said that the seminar, held for the first time, served as a platform to increase awareness and understanding of the rights of those entitled to nafkah through court orders.
"This seminar is organised to provide insights into the enforcement and execution processes for handling debtors (fathers/ex-husbands who ignore court orders) in the Syariah Court,” he said.
Jaidi said the seminar will also assist legal practitioners, relevant agencies, and the local community in effectively enforcing court orders in accordance with existing legal provisions. - BERNAMA
