It is not easy for parents to control their emotions when they are physically and mentally exhausted due to prolonged stress.

SHAH ALAM - Parents of special needs children need to seek social support from family members or experts to prevent undesirable incidents such as abuse against the group.

Universiti Putra Malaysia Social Science Studies Professor Institute Director Dr Haslinda Abdullah said it was not easy for parents to control their emotions when they were physically and mentally exhausted due to prolonged stress.

"It's not just the condition of the child that causes burnout, but financial issues, work or managing other matters related to children are also among the causes of losing control.

"All of these factors undoubtedly have a negative impact if parents do not get sufficient rest. Therefore, in other countries, there are facilities where parents can temporarily leave their children to seek healing," she said.

Haslinda said that the government and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) needed to hold specific discussions on this issue to ensure the safety and health of parents and their special needs children were not compromised by any uncontrollable actions.

"Imagine caring for a child 24 hours a day, the exhaustion can lead to losing sanity in our actions. Hence, there is a need for a strong social support system to assist them.

"A comprehensive approach from all parties is crucial, especially the Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM). Special policies need to be implemented regarding this situation," she added.
