AMMAN - The World Health Organisation (WHO) announced that more than 8,000 children under the age of five in the Gaza Strip have been treated for acute malnutrition, including 1,600 suffering from severe acute malnutrition, resulting in 28 deaths, Jordan News Agency (Petra) reported.
During a press conference in Geneva on Wednesday, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus explained that a large proportion of the population of the Gaza Strip, devastated by the Israeli war, is facing a catastrophic level of food shortages and near-famine conditions.
He pointed out that although there is information indicating an increase in food deliveries, there is currently no evidence that those most in need are receiving sufficient quantities of food of adequate quality.
Israel has been conducting military operations in the Gaza Strip as a response to the attack on its territory by the Palestinian movement Hamas on Oct 7, 2023.
Over 37,000 Palestinians have been killed so far by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to local authorities.
