PETALING JAYA - Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin's parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, are undergoing psychological treatment in the wake of their son's death, according to their lawyer, Mahmud Jumaat.
"The depression has been present before they were remanded, it is clear that any family would experience depression when they lose a loved one.
"I believe from the beginning of the case they have been receiving treatment, especially since they also have another autistic child, Mateen," he told a press conference at the Petaling Jaya Court Complex here on Thursday.
On Thursday, the parents of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to a charge of neglecting the six-year-old autistic child in December last year.
On December 6, 2023, Zayn Rayyan, 6, was found dead in a creek near the Idaman Apartments area in Damansara Damai at 10pm.
The victim's body was discovered by a group of residents conducting a search operation.
The victim was previously reported missing in his residential area before being found lying in the creek about 200 metres from his residential block.
Police confirmed that the victim was believed to have been murdered, following an autopsy that found injuries to the child's neck and body, indicating criminal acts.
