SHAH ALAM - This Father's Day, we explore the growing trend of fathers and sons bonding over video games.
Fathers Share Experiences
Ammar Aslam Ahmad Tarmizi, 30, a human resources executive, said that video games play a crucial role in bonding with his sons.
"Video games are extremely popular now, and playing them together with our sons is a fantastic way to bond and share common interests," he said.
He added that playing video games creates lasting memories, provides fun, and develops skills like teamwork and problem-solving.
However, he stressed the importance of balance, encouraging fathers to include outdoor activities and shared projects.
"It's essential to balance playing video games with other activities," he told Sinar Daily recently.
Ammar also advocated for dads who play video games with their sons, highlighting that it can help develop not just teamwork and problem-solving but also hand-eye coordination.
"It is also an opportunity to connect with your children and foster communication," he said.
Meanwhile, Amirul Aizzat Ahmad Tarmizi, 33, a financial advisor, said he also plays video games with his sons as a way of spending quality time together, alongside physical activities like going to playgrounds or theme parks.
"It is not the most valuable way of spending time with your son, though it can contribute to that," he said.
Amirul also noted the potential negative impact on his kids' eye health from prolonged screen time.
He said that his main reason for buying video games was for himself, not his kids.
A Teenager's Perspective
Abdul Qahhar Abdul Muiz Dzihni, 15, a student, said he does not play video games with his father.
However, he acknowledged that many people do as a way of bonding.
"Video games can help develop the father-son bond through teamwork, communication, and shared goals, which can build a deeper connection," he said.
Abdul Qahhar observed that many of his friends do not play video games with their fathers but recognised the benefits of spending quality time together.
"There is a chance for collaborating on challenges, celebrating victories, and engaging in conversations during and about the game.
"These interactions can build trust, improve communication, and create memorable experiences," he said.
He also pointed out on the rise of "dadfluencers" who create content around gaming with their children, reflecting this growing trend.
"It showcases the positive aspects of gaming, such as teamwork, problem-solving, and the joy of shared experiences," he said.
Shared Interests and Effective Communication
Muhammad Irfan Faiz Mohamad Jasni, a 25-year-old engineer, believes quality time, indoors or outdoors, is key to a strong bond.
He recognised the potential for effective communication during gameplay to bring people closer. Irfan also observed that shared hobbies and interests can further strengthen the connection, with a strong bond potentially turning a father into a son's best friend.
"They might also have a lot of things in common to talk about.
"When the bond is strong, the father can surprisingly become the son's best friend," 'Irfan said.
The Verdict?
Video games can be a valuable tool for fathers and sons to connect, fostering teamwork, communication, and shared experiences.
However, moderation and a focus on quality time, regardless of activity, remain crucial for building a strong and lasting bond.
