Six days remand extension granted for Zayn Rayyan’s parents

PETALING JAYA - The remand of the parents of an autistic child, Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, 6, who was murdered in Damansara Damai last December, has been extended for six days at the magistrate's court here on Friday.

Magistrate Ainaa Muhamad Kamal granted the extension after allowing the police's application under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The husband and wife, clad in purple lock-up attire, would be remanded until Wednesday.

However, the media was not allowed to attend the proceeding as it was still at the investigation stage.

Previously, they were remanded for seven days, starting from June 1.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the couple, Fahmi Abd Moin, said that the police have requested to extend the remand under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code while the investigation is being conducted under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

"My two clients do not need to be detained any longer; they should be released, but the court believes there are grounds to hold them.

"The remand will end next Wednesday, making it the final date of their detention.

"Regardless of whether there is a case or not, they must be released next week," he said.

On Dec 6, last year, Zayn Rayyan was found dead in a river near Idaman Apartment in Damansara Damai at 10pm.

The victim's body was discovered by a group of residents conducting a search operation.

The victim was reported missing from his residence before being found lying in the river, about 200 metres from his residential block.

Police confirmed that the victim was believed to have been murdered following a post-mortem examination which revealed injuries to the neck and body of the child, indicating criminal activity.
