KUALA LUMPUR - Lawyer Fahmi Abd Moin has confirmed his appointment to represent the parents of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, who are currently remanded for seven days to assist in the investigation of the six-year-old child's murder case.
"Yes, it is true. I was officially appointed yesterday," said the former deputy public prosecutor.
He also said that he would attend the Petaling Jaya Magistrate's Court this Friday if the police requested to extend the remand period for the couple.
Zayn Rayyan's parents were detained on Friday and remanded for seven days starting Saturday under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Besides the parents, the police recently took a statement from the former babysitter of the autistic child.
Previously, lawyer Mahmud Abdul Jumaat was appointed by the family of Zayn Rayyan's parents after the 28-year-old couple was arrested by the police at their family residence in Puncak Alam.
However, today, he announced that he no longer represents the couple due to unavoidable circumstances and had no further comments.
Nevertheless, he wished for the case to proceed smoothly according to the existing legal process.
He advised all parties to respect the legal process and refrain from making wild speculations about the case for everyone's well-being.
On Dec 6 last year, Zayn Rayyan was found dead in a stream near the Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai at 10pm.
The victim's body was discovered by a group of residents conducting a search operation.
The child was reported missing in the residential area a day before.
The police confirmed that the victim was believed to have been murdered, as the autopsy results showed injuries on the neck and body consistent with criminal actions.
