SHAH ALAM - Parenting is a journey filled with challenges, growth, and unconditional love.

It's a role that constantly evolves as our children grow, and former lawmaker Nurul Izzah Anwar's reflections on her own journey as a mother beautifully encapsulate this.

In the beginning, Nurul Izzah admits to starting off as a 'tiger mom', driven by a desire to give her best to her children while also juggling the demands of her role as a Member of Parliament.

"It was undoubtedly a stressful time, especially during election periods, but amidst the chaos, I realised that my children were growing up before my eyes," she said in a podcast session with Sinar Daily recently.

From babies to toddlers and now teenagers, Nurul Izzah stressed the importance of communication in parenting.

"Sometimes, we have to be a disciplinarian, other times a friend, and always a source of support.

"What a blessing to be a mother," she said acknowledging that while she could not control the outcome, she could instill key values in her children to guide them on their own paths.

As her children steer their way through life, Nurul Izzah strived to set parameters while allowing for flexibility.

She understood the importance of giving her children the tools to build their own destinies, knowing that one day, they would have to helm the world without their parents by their side.

"It's crucial to equip them with the tools they need to carve out their own destinies.

"One day, they'll have to explore the world without us by their side," she said.

On parenting in the age of Gen Z, Nurul Izzah encouraged parents to understand the spirit of the times.

Just as successful organisations were represented across all generations, she believed parents should recognise and embrace the unique traits and talents of their children, guiding them to fulfill their potential in a rapidly changing world.

"In universities across the United States, there's significant support among this generation for the plight in Gaza.

"It's about how they leverage the content differently. As parents, staying informed and fostering open communication is crucial.

"When it comes to Gen Z parents, instilling optimism is essential. However, certain fundamental principles like cultivating good values remain paramount," she added.
