HULU SELANGOR — Today's Kuala Kubu Bharu by-election has proven to be a comeback for Umno especially in the state in Selangor, says state chief Datuk Megat Zulkarnain Omardin.
He said today's win by the Unity coalition was evident that the party managed recapture and rebuild the party stronger than before.
Speaking to both Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) supporters at the Umno Hulu Selangor headquarters, he said despite former Umno veteran Tan Sri Annuar Musa saying today will be a day of humiliation for the party, the election results were showing otherwise.
"We re-build the party and believe me, we will come back stronger to together and develop the country.
"We believe that this win is to represent our gratitude and although Anwar Musa said on May 11 will be the day we embarrass ourselves, but Allah did not grant his wish because Umno did not get humiliated today.
"This win is our win together,” he said while waiting for the election results.
Megat also claimed that for the past two days Perikatan Nasional had pumped-up their efforts to gain votes from PH supporters but was mitigated by PH and BN leaders who came down to the ground and explained to the people that the coalition was solid and there would not be any "betrayal" by the leaders and party members anymore.
"The Umno members have been making efforts to undo the damage that (former president Tun Dr) Mahathir (Mohamad) had done to the party, and it seems to be working since we are able to stand strong here together with other Umno members to celebrate the party’s 78th anniversary," he said.
Megat further emphasised that the members campaigning for PH today were faced various accusations but because of their ongoing efforts, Umno was also able to stay strong.
Human Resources Minister and PH Election Coordinator Steven Sim was also present.
The KKB by-election tonight will determine who will replace the late DAP’s incumbent Lee Kee Hiong who died recently on March 21 due to cancer.
