Calls for his resignation were merely based on speculation on social media and had not been voiced within the party or state administration.

KANGAR - Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli intends to concentrate on state governance despite facing calls for his resignation amid an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into allegations of abuse of power.

The Perlis Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman said he remained as Perlis chief minister and that the MACC investigation had not affected his position so far.

Shukri said calls for his resignation were merely based on speculation on social media and had not been voiced within the party or state administration.

"It is everyone's right to speak because this country allows freedom of speech, so give them space. I am still the Perlis Menteri Besar.

"The call (to resign) actually comes from social media; many want me to resign, but this demand does not arise within the party or state administration," he said when approached by reporters after chairing the State Government Exco meeting at the Perlis State Legislative Assembly Complex here on Thursday.

The Perlis Pas Commissioner emphasised that the focus now was to continue governing the state effectively.

Meanwhile, Shukri confirmed being held for more than eight hours by the MACC Putrajaya for questioning last Tuesday.

"I was only questioned, not detained. I followed my lawyer; the nine-hour detention was only to assist in the investigation.

"I accept this MACC investigation with an open heart; perhaps it provides space for me to be more disciplined to ensure cleanliness in the state government's administration.

"If necessary, I may be called back by the MACC and I am ready to cooperate," he added.

Last Tuesday, Shukri, who is also the State Assemblyman for Sanglang was detained by the MACC Putrajaya for nine hours before being released to give a statement regarding allegations of abuse of power.
