SHAH ALAM - As families prepare for Hari Raya celebrations, influencer Dr Malar Santhi Santherasegapan (known as Dr Malar) raises a crucial concern: protecting children from body shaming during this festive period.
Dr Malar, who experienced body shaming as a child, emphasises the lasting negative impact it can have on a child's self-esteem and confidence.
She urged parents to take a firm stand if their children face negative comments about their bodies or weight.
"To all parents, protect your children from body or weight shaming this festive season. Stand up for them," Dr Malar said.
In an Instagram video, Dr Malar advised parents to confront critics directly but politely, in the presence of their child, to model for them how to respond to such comments.
"Respond promptly, succinctly, and courteously in front of the child. This teaches them, through their mother's example, how to stand up for themselves," Dr Malar said.
She also pointed out that children's growth rates vary and develop at their own pace.
She reassured parents that being slim in childhood doesn't always indicate health problems, noting that children often undergo growth spurts at various times.
"Children's growth is variable; they might appear slim at one time and fill out as they approach adulthood, around 18 to 20 years, achieving a more ideal weight," Dr Malar said.
She also warned against yielding to societal pressures to meet certain body ideals, which might lead to overfeeding children.
She highlighted the importance of promoting a positive body image and protecting children from damaging criticisms.
"Avoid making comments that could make a child feel insecure about their body.
"It's crucial to defend and shield your children from such negative remarks," Dr Malar stressed.
