KEMAMAN - A student at a public university in Terengganu resorted to lodge a false report to hide her act of giving birth to a child out of wedlock from her family.
Kemaman District Police Chief Superintendent Hanyan Ramlan said the 22-year-old female student was arrested for making a false report regarding the birth of her baby early Friday morning.
Hanyan said the incident was uncovered after the suspect sought treatment at a health clinic in this district accompanied by her sister at about 2am due to bleeding.
However, he said the doctor treating the girl became suspicious of the information provided and proceeded to make a police report.
"The suspect gave birth to the baby in the toilet of her family's residence in Paka, Dungun early this morning.
"So, her sister, who discovered the incident, took the suspect to a health clinic in another district.
"This was because they were concerned that their parents, who are also medical officers, would find out," he said when contacted by reporters here on Friday.
Hanyan added that the police investigation found the baby wrapped in a white cloth hidden behind the house.
He added that the baby was then taken to Kemaman Hospital but was pronounced dead by medical officers.
"The suspect admitted to starting the illicit relationship at her male friend's rented house last April," he said.
Meanwhile, Hanyan said the suspect was taken to Kemaman Hospital for further treatment while the baby's body was also taken to the same hospital's forensic unit for investigation.
Hanyan said the case is being investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code.
