SHAH ALAM - Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has slammed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, accusing him of targeting him and Tun Daim Zainuddin with investigations despite their support during the 2018 Port Dickson by-election.
Dr Mahathir stressed that he played a pivotal role in Anwar's release from imprisonment during his second term as prime minister.
He also actively supported Anwar's candidacy in the Port Dickson by-election, alongside Daim.
"Upon my return to the prime minister's office, I was instrumental in Anwar's release from incarceration.
"Following that, when he decided to run in the Port Dickson by-election, Daim and I were at the forefront, campaigning in his favor.
"Now, he seems intent on launching investigations against us, alleging misconduct," Dr Mahathir told a press conference at Yayasan Kepimpinan Perdana in Putrajaya.
The 2018 Port Dickson by-election, where Anwar emerged as a candidate, witnessed significant involvement from Daim, who was then leading the Council of Eminent Persons.
Daim's active campaigning and rallying local support were crucial in a tightly contested race featuring seven candidates.
