KLANG - Malaysia's international cruise homeport for the Costa Serena cruise ship will attract more foreign tourists and boost economic growth.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced this significant development, highlighting the various factors that make Malaysia an attractive choice for cruise enthusiasts worldwide.
"Costa, a prominent European cruise liner, is set to make Malaysia its homeport, meaning that all passengers will embark and disembark from Malaysian ports.
"This move is crucial as it will not only attract foreign tourists but also encourage them to explore Malaysia for a few days before and after their cruise, leading to increased spending on local attractions and services," he said in a speech during the Inauguration of Costa Serena: Malaysia's First International Cruise Homeport' at Costa Serena Cruise, Port Klang.
Furthermore, Loke highlighted the value-for-money proposition that Malaysia offers to tourists with current global uncertainties.
He said Malaysia provides a cost-effective alternative for cruise travellers.
"Instead of going to other parts of the world, when you come to Malaysia, you pay in our currency.
"This makes the entire tour package, including cruise expenses, more affordable for our visitors," he explained.
In an effort to cater to a diverse range of tourists, the transport minister emphasised the Muslim-friendly aspect of cruises departing from Malaysia.
"Cruises are obtaining certification from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), ensuring that halal options are available on board.
"This move aims to address the needs of Muslim travellers who often face challenges finding halal facilities on international cruises," he said.
Loke also revealed plans to further promote Malaysia as a homeport destination by attending world cruise conferences in Miami.
"This international outreach aims to position Malaysia as a premier cruise destination, fostering collaboration with other cruise operators and attracting a broader audience," he said.
