SHAH ALAM - Bersatu members have urged party president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to remain as president for the continued betterment of the party.

Bersatu Armada information chief Mohd Ashraf Mustaqim said Bersatu members have compelled Muhyiddin to withdraw his decision not to defend his presidency.

"We want to him to withdraw his decision, as we still want him as president,” he told Sinar Daily.

In saying this, the Kota Seputeh assemblyman clarified that it doesn't imply that the party lacks leaders.

"We have a pool of leaders including Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, Bersatu vice president Radzi Jidin and others as well who have exceptional qualities.

"While some names may be less known, it's because they haven't had the chance yet.

"Leaders who are more qualified and prepared should be given the opportunity,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, Ketereh member of parliament Datuk Khlir Mohd Nor said Muhyiddin should remain in office as long as he can contribute to the party.

"There seems to be no reason for him to step down unless it's due to health reasons.

"So far, the current president is strong and has many ideas for Bersatu and the nation,” he said.

Commenting further, Johor Bersatu division chief Mohd Faizal Asmal said Muhyiddin should stay on as president as he is the founder of Bersatu and party members still need him.

"It’s not the time to change the president yet,” he said.

Earlier today, it was reported that Bersatu delegates at the Annual General Assembly unanimously rejected the decision of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin not to defend the position of President in the upcoming party elections.

This was announced by the permanent chairman Datuk Suhaimi Abdullah after discussions with 20 representatives, who participated in this year's assembly.

The delegates also passed two other motions relating to the matter, which are the motion to reject its supreme council members from holding meetings to discuss potential candidates for Muhyiddin's predecessors, as well as the current assembly to be Muhyiddin's final assembly as a president.
