SHAH ALAM - Overuse injuries are a prevalent concern in extreme sports like bodybuilding, warns Medical Fitness Consultant Dr Aiesha Asmadi.
In an interview with Sinar Daily, Dr Aiesha pointed out that overuse injuries are often overlooked by athletes.
"The most common type of sports injury is an overuse injury.
"When you're involved in extreme sports such as bodybuilding, you're sometimes in a calorie deficit while also training intensely.
"This can be a recipe for disaster if not managed properly," she said.
She stressed the importance of a balanced approach to training and recovery.
"It's crucial to find a balance in training intensity and recovery time.
"Overuse injuries often result in muscle tears, something that athletes and healthcare providers should closely monitor," she said.
Discussing further, Dr Aiesha also highlighted the importance of post-training recovery.
"Focusing intently on your recovery is vital.
"Putting yourself under excessive stress without proper recovery will negatively impact your training outcomes; you won't achieve the right kind of stimulation and adaptation," she added.
As a two-time breast cancer survivor, Dr Aiesha urges athletes to ensure that their training, nutrition, and supplementation plans are well-structured and organised.
She also encouraged athletes to consult specialists and undergo a comprehensive body check-up to identify any overlooked injuries.
"One of the most common injury-prone body parts is the shoulder, especially the rotator cuff.
"Athletes often ignore this area, thinking it's a minor issue.
"They may still have compensatory muscles aiding them, but it's crucial to get these issues assessed and treated before they worsen," she said.
