HAMBURG - Hamburg Airport has been closed after an armed gunman forced his way onto the premises and fired two shots in the air, a spokesman for the federal police said on Saturday evening.
A gunman crashed through a gate with his vehicle at around 8pm (1900 GMT) and drove onto the apron of the airport, Thomas Gerbert told German news agency (dpa).
The armed man fired twice into the air. He is believed to have two children in his vehicle.
The spokesman said that the man's wife had previously contacted the state police about a possible child abduction.
A heavy police presence from the state and federal police were on site, said Gerbert. They were in the vicinity of the vehicle. They included the federal police's evidence and arrest unit.
"They are very robustly equipped," said Gerbert.
In October authorities closed the same airport due to an attack threat on a flight from Tehran to Hamburg. - BERNAMA-dpa
