NEW DELHI - Pakistan and the Maldives have denounced Israel's attack on the Jabalia refugee camp in Gaza as a war crime.

"The attack is the latest in a series of war crimes being perpetrated against the people of Gaza. It also underlines the urgency of an unconditional ceasefire to protect civilians from further carnage," Pakistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We urge the international community, especially the backers of Israel, to take urgent measures to bring an end to hostilities, to lift the siege of Gaza, to protect civilians, and to facilitate humanitarian corridors for provision of uninterrupted relief supplies to the beleaguered people of Gaza," it said.

Israel killed more than 400 Palestinians in the refugee camp attack on Tuesday, fuelling worldwide anger against its relentless bombing of Gaza's population and drawing accusations of a deliberate genocide.

The Maldives government called for decisive measures against Israel to stop these attacks.

It said the deliberate acts of violence by Israel against the innocent civilian population of Palestine are a gross violation of international humanitarian law and amount to a war crime.

Israel and the United States, which has stepped up weapons supply to the Jewish state, have defied calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid for 2.3 million people in the Gaza Strip - BERNAMA
