KUALA LUMPUR - The government will tighten measures to control the smuggling of liquor products by implementing several initiatives starting from 1 January 2024.
Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said among the initiatives was to limit the transshipment of the product in certain ports only.
"The Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex will be used as a single exit for the northern region.
"In addition, import activities for cigarettes for the domestic market are carried out in full container loads," he said.
He said this when tabling the Madani Malaysia Budget 2024 in the Dewan Rakyat, here on Friday.
In the meantime, Anwar agreed to reward the enforcement agencies for their continued commitment and outstanding performance in combating the leakage of national revenue.
"The government appreciates the commitment of enforcement agencies such as the police, Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the Customs Department in increasing enforcement efforts and operations to combat the leakage.
"The ability of the police action against crime and MACC's efforts to probe financial syndicates and cartels should be appreciated.
"Any law enforcement agencies that show continuous commitment and excellent performance will be rewarded accordingly," he said.
