SHAH ALAM - "My responsibility is to safeguard the interests of the people, not the interests of the big bosses!"

This bold statement was made by Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security Committee chairperson Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh in response to the actions of former MCA vice president Datuk Seri Ti Lian Ker, who criticised his actions of threatening to revoke manufacturing licences if they refuse to sell local rice at government-set prices.

Dr Muhamad Akmal said that it would be better for Ti Lian Ker to remain silent if he did not understand the issues faced by the people.

"If you don't know the real issues and the hardships faced by the people, it's better to keep quiet because it seems like he lacks intelligence," he said in a Facebook entry on Wednesday.

Previously, a three-minute and 24-second video went viral, showing the Umno youth chief conducting surprise checks at two rice mills in Melaka on Monday.

In the video, Dr Akmal also warned manufacturers to sell rice at government-set prices and, if they fail to do so, his office would not hesitate to revoke their factory licences.
