SHAH ALAM - Three cases of domestic violence resulting in fatalities have been recorded in Selangor in two months, specifically in August and September.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan stated that domestic violence not only involves physical or mental injuries but also, in some cases, leads to fatalities.
"In August and September, we were shocked by three cases of domestic violence that resulted in deaths in Serdang, Kajang, and Petaling Jaya.
"The first case involved a child who was abused to death by his mother and her male companion, the second case resulted in the death of a wife, and the third case involved a child killing his own father," he said.
He emphasised that the stigma that viewed domestic violence as a private or family matter needed to be dispelled.
"Domestic violence is not a trivial matter because if left unaddressed, it can result in loss of life.
"We need to change the perception that it is none of our business, considering that this crime can harm victims, children, and other family members if allowed to continue," he said during the Selangor Police Seminar on Combating Domestic Violence here.
Regarding the organisation of the seminar, he clarified that it was held to provide knowledge about the latest legal provisions and procedures for handling domestic violence cases.
"Someof the topics covered include investigation procedures, types of assistance and support, including counselling.
"In addition, information related to places and protection orders for victims, legal assistance services, and self-defence techniques are also presented and demonstrated," he said.
