JAKARTA - The Indonesian presidential race is gaining momentum as Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar have been declared as presidential and vice-presidential candidates, respectively, for the 2024-2029 term.
The announcement was made during a declaration ceremony by Nasdem Party chairman Surya Paloh in Surabaya, East Java, which was broadcast live on local television.
Anies, 54, is the former governor of Jakarta from 2017 to 2022 while Muhaimin, also known as Cak Imin, is president of Parti Kebangkitan Bangsa.
According to Surya, both candidates possess leadership qualities that can offer a fresh perspective in addressing future societal challenges.
The duo will be officially registered once the registration for the 2024 Indonesian Presidential Election opens from Oct 19 to Nov 25.
"I extend my best wishes to Anies as the presidential candidate and Muhaimin as the vice-presidential candidate," he said at the event.
Anies joins the list of presidential candidates, which includes Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo and Defence Minister Prabowo Subianto. - BERNAMA
